I really don’t know the best way to say this other than there will be ‘doll nudity’ in some of the links I will provide.
I rather prefer to make toys more aimed towards younger audiences, but my inspirations come from dolls that were either made for adults (for non-porn reasons) or dolls made by other cultures that are not as terrified of non-sexualized nudity as America is.
In short: Disclaimer, naked imitation humans. But I’m pretty sure at least 75% of you took figure drawing so this isn’t even that crazy.
What directly inspired me to try and make a doll was the creation of the Vladonna doll produced with help by Kid Robot. Pearl, a famous drag queen with an interest in toys, designed a doll. It isn’t a mainstream market thing, and obviously only appeals to a narrow scope of people who enjoy customizing dolls, and obviously is a little graphic, but it was enough of a push to have me realize that making a doll is something I could do.
Another major source of inspiration are Ball Jointed Dolls, which have a fairly long history, but the latest of which are most popularly made in Asia, such as Iplehouse. I enjoy their complexity, the attention to detail and fluidity of movement possible with advanced joint mechanics.
So my senior project ended up being a combination of these various sources. Mixing my enjoyment of more complex dolls with a more cartoonish shape.
